Ben DeSmidt, an associate professor emeritus of classics and Great Ideas, has been elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly.
A newcomer to politics, he will begin the two-year term Jan. 6. Prof. DeSmidt will represent District 65, which includes much of the city of Kenosha.
Running as a Democrat, Prof. DeSmidt received 53.3% of the vote in the Nov. 5 election, according to unofficial Kenosha County results. He succeeds Rep. Tod Ohnstad, who chose not to run after holding the seat for the past 11 years.
Known to many Carthage alumni, Prof. DeSmidt taught here from 2005 to 2020. He co-owns Union Park Tavern in Kenosha.
