Translator/Interp For The Deaf (DEAF TRANSLATOR INTERPRETER)

Job Summary

This position is located in the Student Disability Center (SDC) and performs the following duties: interprets/translates for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in degree related instructional activities. Assists with various projects as assigned.

Applicants will be screened on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position.

  • Expressive and receptive interpreting/transliterating skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE) to provide thorough and accurate interpretation/transliteration in degree-related instructional activities.
  • Knowledge of various manual and oral communication styles utilized by deaf and hard of hearing persons.
  • Knowledge of scientific and other technical terms and their spellings; resourcefulness and creativity to access resources for existing technical signs and to develop logical signs to express otherwise unrepresented terms and concepts.
  • Knowledge of ethical standards, appropriate roles, and various individual responsibilities relating to auxiliary services and sign language interpreting.
  • Knowledge of the communication needs of deaf and hard of hearing people; skills to communicate this information to faculty, staff, and student peers.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of RID certificate in interpretation or transliteration and/or NAD Level IV, or Level V certification.
  • Completion of an interpreter training program
  • Knowledge of student support services and resources; skills to refer deaf or hard of hearing students to appropriate professional support member of the SDC Disability Specialists team.
  • Interpersonal skills to foster student responsibility for his/her individual needs while providing assistance with communication for limited and specific purposes.
  • Interpersonal, communication and organizational skills to maintain effective and mutually supportive working relationships with other members of the interpreting staff.
  • Ability to maintain records. Ability to effectively communicate with faculty and staff.
  • Ability to learn and apply University and Program policy concerning confidentiality of student information.

Work Environment

  • Must adjust schedule to provide interpreting services as needed. Schedule is subject to change with only 12-24 hours notification. Work flexible schedule including hours outside standard 8AM-5PM schedule.
  • Work occasional overtime, evenings/nights, and/or weekends as needed, usually on short notice to meet operational needs.
  • Work occasional varied lunch hours.
  • Attire appropriate to interpreting situation is required.
