Position Summary

The REACT-APAC project (Modelling Scales of Societal Resilience to Concurrent Shocks in the Asia-Pacific Region) at Washington University in St. Louis invites applicants for a full-time, Research Assistant in the area of societal resilience and environmental shocks in the Asia Pacific region. This is a time-limited position beginning January 1st, 2025, of up to three years in accordance with the project timeline and based upon annual evaluation. This position will reside in the Spatial Analysis, Interpretation, and Exploration laboratory, saielab.wustl.edu PI: M. Frachetti (Anthropology).


The REACT-APAC project aims to generate novel frameworks for understanding societal resilience to systemic and current shocks across the Asia-Pacific region (APAC). The project integrates long-term climate and event data, multi-scalar historical mapping and remote sensing data, and non-western knowledge and indigenous perspectives to generate inclusive and transferable theories of resilience. A key facet of the project is its use of interdisciplinary methods to better understand how resilience plays out a very local scales across diverse contexts, combining detailed historical analysis of paleoclimatic, geospatial, and historical data about concurrent shocks and their social responses in key cases across South and SE Asia. The project integrates these data to develop a multi-scalar framework to model and compare the diverse expressions of resilience through time and across a range of ecological and social settings.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Conduct literature reviews, data compilation and structuring of project assets including satellite imagery archives, environmental disaster databases, and reports concerning social recovery and environmental change in the Asia/Pacific Region.

• Assist in analysis of relational databases include advanced querying. Knowledge of Excel required; GIS tools and one or more social statistical packages (SPSS, R, etc.) highly desirable.

• Collaborate with senior staff and members of the REACT-APAC team to draft reports, correspondence, documents, policy briefs, notes, and other web content, report periodic findings, and provide outreach support. Provide other research support, writing and editing for various reports and documents.

• Manage project documents and files.

• Perform duties requiring independent judgment and analysis related to data gathering, report preparation, and special projects.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

$17.10 - $29.09 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
