Department Summary


The Academic Senate is one of the distinctive organizational elements of the University of California (UC). Codified by the UC Regents in 1920, the Academic Senate is the vehicle through which faculty share in the operation and management of the university. UCLA?s contemporary practice of consultative decision making and shared governance reinforces the notion that faculty are at the heart of the academic enterprise of teaching, research, and public service and critical to maintaining the quality of the university?s academic programs. The Senate is delegated authority over such matters as degree and enrollment requirements and program establishment, disestablishment, and review. Position Summary



Serve as Principal Policy Analyst for the Council on Academic Personnel, Committee on Rules and Jurisdiction, and related standing committees and subcommittees (Committees). Facilitate the administrative and analytical aspects of the Committees. Provide complex administrative analysis of issues and make policy recommendations with campus-wide impact; identify issues and trends that impact the campus at-large; conduct analysis and review for assigned committees; recommend special report topics; serve as historical continuity/institutional memory. Serve as a subject matter expert on divisional and University-wide policies, procedures, regulations, bylaws, and practices essential to the authority and activity of the assigned Committees. Represent the Academic Senate as liaison with administrative offices and academic units. Acting in a general administrative capacity, serve the organization by performing other duties as required, consistent with the mission and goals of the Academic Senate.

Qualifications



  • Working knowledge of divisional and systemwide legislation. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of parliamentary procedure and academic personnel policy. (Required)
  • Ability to adapt to annual changes in Senate committee chairs and members as well as Senate officers. (Required)
  • Skill in analyzing complex information, addressing challenges, forming logical conclusions, and making recommendations for effective solutions. (Required)
  • Skill in leadership as demonstrated by exercising mature judgment in independent decision making to coordinate and determine action with little supervision. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and administration to insure effective coordination of the work of the Committees and the Academic Senate as a whole. (Required)
  • Skill in independently coordinating an extensive and varied workload with multiple deadlines, and modifying or adapting office procedures to optimize effort and use of time and materials. Skill in defining and setting appropriate priorities, organizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner. (Required)
  • Skill in interacting diplomatically with faculty, staff, students and administration, assuring confidentiality of sensitive documents, communicating established policies, and recommending changes when appropriate, with an ability to maintain equanimity. (Required)
  • Skills in using Microsoft Office and sustain working knowledge of changing technology (Required)
  • Skill in verbal and written communication to author analytic reports using logical arguments, appropriate facts and data, and statistical information. Writing skills to prepare concise, professional, and accurate written documents. (Required)
  • Ability to thrive in a high-paced environment with competing agendas, priorities, and deadlines. (Required)
