The City of Sidney is currently hiring for the position of Police Officer. Salary Information:
Effective January 1, 2024: $68,442 to $87,478 annually
Benefit Information:
The City provides uniforms and equipment, two weeks of paid vacation per year, four personal days per year (after 6 months), 18 sick days per year, 11 paid holidays, and longevity pay after five years of employment.
Department Overview:
The Sidney Police Department consists of 37 sworn officers, 11 dispatchers, and 6 support staff members. The department's mission is to exceed the expectations of the community, adapt to changing challenges, and provide the highest level of service and protection. The department handles approximately 32,000 calls for service each year and offers various opportunities for officers to advance, including positions in the patrol section, investigative section, tactical response team, bike patrol unit, K9 team, and other specialized roles. The department is housed in a new building and equipped with state-of-the-art technology and training.
Area Information:
Sidney is located in Shelby County, Ohio, and features several historical sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city is known for its parks and recreational system, including the 220-acre Tawawa Park. Sidney hosts seasonal events such as band concerts, farmer's markets, festivals, and a Winter Wonderland Parade that attracts thousands of visitors.

Job Requirements:
Age: Minimum of 21 years and appointed prior to age 35
Citizenship: Must be lawfully able to work in the U.S.
High School Grad/GED: Required
Valid Ohio Driver's License: Required
Ability to Read/Speak English: Required
Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors:
Must pass BCI and FBI background investigation
Must have a valid driver's license and no more than one conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol
Must not have a history of addiction to intoxicating liquors or drugs
Must not have a pattern of poor work habits or performance with previous employers
Must not have been dismissed from civil service for delinquency or misconduct
Bonus Credit on Exam Score:
Military Bonus: Ohio applicants who are veterans and can provide proper proof of honorable discharge or release (DD 214) will receive a 20% bonus on their exam score upon passing.
OPOTA Certification: Applicants with OPOTA certification will also receive a 20% bonus upon passing the examination.
The maximum bonus for any applicant is 20%.
Residency Requirement:
Successful applicants must reside in Shelby County or an adjacent county within one year of completing their probationary period.
Probationary Period:
The probationary period for new officers is from the date of hire until 189 days worked after completing the field training program. Hours worked on light duty do not count towards completing the probationary period.
Additional Benefits:
Employees may participate in group medical, dental, and vision coverage, effective the first of the month following employment. Retirement benefits are provided through the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund.
Prohibitions:
Police Officers must not ridicule or criticize the City, its departments, policies, or other employees in a manner that undermines the effectiveness of the Department or interferes with discipline.

Officers are expected to be loyal, subordinate to lawful directives, available for work, competent, productive, adaptive to job demands, responsible for their decisions, and respectful in their interactions.
