Guest Managing Editor (Part-Time, Remote): Special Opportunity at Buffalo’s Fire
Buffalo’s Fire, an independent, Native-led online news organization, offers an experienced editor a unique opportunity to lead community journalism during a transformative time. As Guest Managing Editor, you will lead story development, edit, shape digital news efforts, and manage a small team of reporters and freelancers. This is a part-time position with potential for growth and advancement to full-time given the anticipated growth of the newsroom that may likely double soon.
This position comes with the exciting challenge of focusing on critical issues like:
Murdered and Missing Indigenous People (MMIP) : Help position Buffalo’s Fire as a leader in reporting on the MMIP crisis, a vital and underreported issue impacting Indian Country. Your work will drive enterprise stories that bring attention, justice and advocacy to this critical human rights issue.
Data Sovereignty : Lead Buffalo’s Fire’s efforts on data sovereignty, focusing on in-depth journalism highlighting Indigenous data rights and sovereignty, an emerging and critical issue for Native communities.
Decolonizing Newsroom Practices : Contribute to our efforts in decolonizing journalism, decentering Western frameworks, and helping to shape stories that dismantle stereotypes and honor cultural identity.
This is a temporary, part-time position with compensation commensurate with experience – perfect for someone passionate about making a significant impact in Native journalism while working alongside a committed team. There is also potential for future opportunities based on performance and organizational needs.
We are seeking candidates with strong editorial experience, particularly in managing reporters. Familiarity with Indigenous issues or a passion for elevating Native voices is highly desired. The ideal candidate will be skilled at editing, story development, managing reporters and freelancers, and work independently while contributing to a collaborative environment.
We ask for a demonstrated commitment to journalistic integrity, a sharp editorial eye and the ability to meet deadlines. Experience in data journalism or investigative reporting would be an asset.
To apply, please send your resume and a brief cover letter outlining your relevant experience and passion for Indigenous journalism to [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
