Job Description

David Geffen School of Drama (DGSD) at Yale University seeks an experienced and dynamic performing arts professional to lead a pre-eminent MFA program in Theater Management.

The Geffen School, in partnership with Yale Repertory Theatre (YRT), trains and advances leaders in the practice of every theatrical discipline, making art to inspire joy, empathy, and understanding in the world. DGSD?s and Yale Rep?s core values are artistry, belonging, collaboration, and discovery: working together as a medical school and teaching hospital may, our community comprises eight three-year MFA programs-Acting, Design, Directing, Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism, Playwriting, Stage Management, Technical Design and Production, and Theater Management-as well as a one-year Technical Internship program. Students in the Theater Management program are also eligible to earn a joint MBA/MFA degree in four years by securing separate admission to Yale?s School of Management.

The Chair of the Theater Management program reports to the Dean of DGSD, while supervising all activities of, teaching classes in, and serving as mentor to students of, the Theater Management Program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Mentoring

  1. Establish curriculum and class schedule, centering anti-racist practice while balancing pedagogical needs with budgetary constraints, faculty and space availability, and promoting safety.  Ensure ongoing faculty and student evaluation of curriculum.
  2. Establish and communicate program  expectations and requirements to Theater Management students. Support, guide, encourage, and evaluate their progress.
  3. Participate in designing program?s anti-racist theater practice class, as well as DGSD?s equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives and programs. 
  4. Teach two (2) to three (3) courses in each of the fall and spring semesters.
  5. Promote quality of teaching, especially in the context of the case-study method; participate in review of faculty.  Ensure ongoing student review and evaluation.
  6. Manage Professional Work Assignment process and coordinate student performance reviews. Supervise Yale Cabaret Managing Director?s professional work assignment and Knowledge Base Managing Editor?s work-study position.
  7. Manage one-semester fellowship placement process for second-year students.
  8. Supervise case study process, serve as Chair of Knowledge Base Editorial Board, and liaise with School of Management case writing program.
  9. Collaborate with Chair of Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism Program to oversee joint Producing Track.
  10. Liase with School of Management regarding joint degree MFA/MBA program.
  11. Foster DGSD connections to field resources and promote career placement for Theater Management students and alumni.
  12. Other duties as requested by Dean.

Program Administration

  1. Collaborate with Deans and DGSD Chairs to determine strategy and policy, promoting anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of operation.
  2. Lead and manage admission process for Theater Management applicants, including participation in Visitor Day and virtual sessions, chairing program?s admission committee, interviews, and site visits.
  3. Hire part time faculty and workshop leaders, including but not limited to, conducting searches and interviews, setting up and observing demonstration classes, and calling references.  In concert with Dean and Associate Dean/Managing Director establish salaries for visiting lecturers; negotiate salaries.
  4. Supervise Theater Management faculty and workshop leaders.
  5. Determine and manage Theater Management program budget.
  6. Determine and supervise Theater Management work-study assignments. Collaborate with the Student Labor Supervisor on all work-study related matters.
  7. Handle requests for information about the program from prospective faculty, students, and the field, as well as recommendations for students and graduates as appropriate.
  8. Represent Theater Management Program and serve as primary liaison and expert resource within DGSD andYale and to the field.
  9. Other related duties as requested by Dean.

RANK AND TERM OF APPOINTMENT

The appointment will be at an open rank commensurate with the successful candidate?s experience (Assistant Professor Adjunct/Associate Professor Adjunct/Professor in the Practice), for a term of no less than three years beginning July 1, 2025, renewable, and includes competitive salary with full faculty benefits. Minimum base salary: $115K, plus an administrative supplement of $15K tied to the role of Chair.
