Job Description

Gateway Foundation, Inc. is a national non-profit dedicated to helping individuals with substance use and mental health disorders. Established in 1968, Gateway provides essential tools and knowledge for recovery, positively impacting hundreds of thousands of lives. Operating through its Community Services, Corrections Divisions, and Corporate Headquarters, the organization is recognized for innovative, effective treatment approaches and maintaining high standards. Certified Substance Abuse Counselors are responsible for:

  • Completes comprehensive assessment of clients’ substance abuse history and treatment requirements, and prepares individualized developmentally appropriate treatment plan.
  • Provides individual and group counseling, and educational programs in accordance with treatment plan.
  • Documents treatment and discharge plans, and clients’ progress and responses to treatments; and maintains related records and charts.
  • Performs case management and contributes to client care monitoring.
  • Caseload typically includes some complex cases requiring more intensive services.
  • Work schedule is Sunday through Thursday. Sunday from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm and Monday to Thursday 12:30 pm - 9:00 pm
  • You will also be eligible to receive a shift differential of $3 per hour when working Monday-Thursday, 12:30pm-9pm shift.
Job Requirements:
  • Current certification or qualification as an alcohol, drug, or substance abuse counselor in New Jersey. (CADC, LCADC, LPC)
  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, mental health counseling, or substance abuse counseling
  • Ability to perform assessment, treatment planning, and counseling, and provide intensive services for some complex cases, with minimal supervision and direction, at a level normally acquired through two years prior experience in the substance abuse field
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk and move about the facilities for up to two hours at a time, to monitor and interact with clients
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to use a keyboard and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and/or audit information and data
  • Ability to record, proofread and check documents and files for accuracy
  • Ability to respond to telephones, and to hear and detect alarms and unusual noises
Compensation (based on experience and credentials):
  • Certified/Licensed Counselor - $29-37/hour.
  • Uncertified Counselor - $19-26/hour.
