Job Description

Position provides security and unarmed protective services to the personnel and assets of Riverland Community College. This position assists the Safety Administrator in the continued development and maintenance of a comprehensive security and emergency management program that proactively identifies and supports college operations (e.g., daily activities, campus events, at-home sporting events, graduation, academic programs, etc.) at multiple campus locations. This position provides courteous and professional security services consistent with the limitations of available security assets and non-salary resources. This position performs daily surveillance monitoring activities, and randomly patrols the interiors/exteriors of campus properties to deter potential crime and misconduct. Position responsibilities include determining appropriate incident response, coordinating security issues as they arise, and in providing support and training in security principals for employees and college stakeholders as necessary.

1. Maintain and expand on the campus security program with the objectives to deter potential crime, deter misconduct and inappropriate behavior, and assist in providing a safe and secure college environment.

2. Hire, train and supervise student security workers ensuring student workers are able to complete assigned tasks completely, accurately, and according to security standards.

3. In collaboration with college leadership and the Safety Administrator, develop and conduct security and emergency management trainings.

4. Maintain compliance with U.S. Department of Education?s Clery Act and Minnesota Office of Higher Education?s security and reporting requirements.   

5. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least two (2) years of experience as a Security Patrol Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, or Peace Officer  - OR -Associate's degree in Law Enforcement, Paralegal or related field may substitute for 1 year of experience; Bachelor's degree in above areas may substitute for 2 years of experience.

Preferred Qualification 

  • Knowledge of federal/state laws such as FEMA, Clery Act, and Homeland Security requirements sufficient to administer security and emergency management responsibilities.

  • Oral and written communications skills:

    • sufficient to interview witnesses, victims, suspects, and defuse conflicts,

    • sufficient to develop and present training on security and/or emergency management issues/policy/practices, develop and write policies & procedures, programs and reports.

  • Computer skills sufficient to use general office application/productivity software (e.g., computer operating system, e-mail, word-processing, database/spreadsheet, calendar/scheduling, presentation graphics, Internet browser & search software).

  • Ability to review & evaluate work environments, identify/recognize potential security hazards and emergency management needs and evaluate & apply corrective measures.

  • Incident Command System training and related Homeland Security and FEMA course work.

  • Knowledge of standard police practices including rules of evidence, investigation techniques and procedures, citizen's arrest power, loss prevention techniques, intrusion alarms, detection, surveillance systems and networking, radio and communications equipment and fire alarms.

  • Knowledge of Data Privacy Act and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

  • Bilingual/multilingual fluent in Spanish, Somali, Karen, Anuak, Nuer, or other languages that reflect our student body, workforce, and communities.

  • Demonstrated experience working with multicultural and underserved populations.
