Position description

Project Scientist opportunity - KCCAMS facility

The W. M. Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (KCCAMS) facility at the University of California (UC), Irvine is searching for a scientist to assist with the operation, maintenance, and further development of its accelerator mass spectrometers.

The KCCAMS facility conducts radiocarbon measurements in support of carbon cycle, climate change, and air quality research. It provides services to researchers within the University of California and beyond, and educates its user community by hosting researchers in its laboratories, and organizing and teaching courses. The facility consists of the KCCAMS sample preparation laboratory and four laboratories focused on terrestrial/atmospheric, marine, and paleoclimate research. It operates two accelerator mass spectrometers (NEC 0.5 MV 1.5SDH-2 and Ionplus 0.2 MV MICADAS) for radiocarbon analysis of graphite targets and carbon dioxide gas.

The KCCAMS facility seeks an individual, interested in longer-term employment, to operate, maintain, and further develop the 0.5 MV AMS, and assist in the maintenance of the MICADAS. The ideal candidate would also support the overall success of the facility by contributing to radiocarbon data analysis, sample processing, communication with facility users, training, methods development, and the operation of other facility instrumentation.

The successful candidate is expected to devote approximately 80% of their time to the operation, maintenance, and development of the accelerators, and 20% conducting research, mentoring students and postdocs, training visiting researchers, laboratory safety, and performing other duties for the facility as needed.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and would start at $74,100 plus benefits. The position will be initially for 1 year, renewable dependent on job performance. Review of applicants will begin in October 2024 and remain open until filled.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Candidates are expected to have a background in accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) physics or chemistry with a proven disposition toward experimental techniques and applications related to process logistics and optimization, ion optics, handling high voltages, electronics, vacuums, and programming.

Preference will be given to candidates with an advanced degree, Ph.D. or Ms. degree in physics, radiochemistry or similar AMS-related field, or expected to obtain it before employment.
